The Full contact Kyokushin karate matches which were organised by Sparimaka led by Shihan Remie Burke on the 30th of August were an enormous success! Fortunately there was no need for the Paramedics helicopter sponsored by Hi-Jet and the ringdoctor Floyd Henar was not needed for any big actions. In total there were 39 fighters participating in these championships, 35 men and 4 women. There was a tight time schedule and stamina became a big issue during the fights, since Kyokushin doesn’t know any rest between bouts which ended in a Ike Waka (TIE), which meant that the fighters needed to get right in there again. The referee’s were lead by Shihan Alberga and the judges table was lead by head representative Shihan Burgos. The tournament was for all styles, and we were glad to welcome fighters coming out of Karate, Muay Thai and Taekwondo.

Because of the great fighting spirit where every fighter gave it all for the victory, the referee’s had a busy job guiding the fights in order of the rules and regulations. Because we cannot strike the head with a punch or other hand technique the referee’s had to correct some occasions., many fighters ended up with half a point deducted because in the heat of the fight this sometimes happened. Rose Benjamin and Iwan Haltman of the Sparimaka club were two of the fighters who lost there fight because of making this mistake and ending up with an official warning. Because Iwan Haltman is a know fighter in the Muay Thai style as well this was extra tough for him not to make those techniques.

Some irregularities happen in every event, so we need to say it happened on these championships as well. After 30 years this was the second time an event of this size was organised and some judgements made by the referee’s could have been better.
One fight between Randy Badal (Burgos) and Wayne Herkul (Sparimaka) was a good example of this. The fight was in the heavyweight division and during the fight Herkul fell. In this action he was kneed to the face, which is normally allowed, it only appeared (after studying the video material) that Herkul was already with both his knees on the mat, which made it illegal to attack him after that.

Eight fighters of Sparimaka reached the last 4 in the five different classes. Shihan Burke is extremely satisfied, knowing that most of his fighters are not training that long.
Archi Orban, Jafari Boldwijn, Wayne Herkul en Juanita Maatstap were fighters who impressed the public in a very positive way, knowing that most of them are not training that very long.

One of the main events during the evening was the Tamishiware demonstration by Shihan Burke where he broke 4 pieces of ice during a demonstration. Shihan Burke is known to do some extreme demonstrations in Suriname like lifting over 100 kg of weights just with his teeth or breaking wood with his shinbones.
